Measuring Length!

This week our little brown bears have been working hard to measure different lengths!

This week our little brown bears have been working hard to measure different lengths! To start the week as a class we were discussing how we would measure lengths. The children were able to tell me we needed to use something to help us.

As a good start point, we used cubes to measure different lengths. The children were all able to do this and understood the language of 'shortest and longest'.

As we approached the end of the week, we began to use rulers and have started to develop our understanding of  the units of measure 'centimetres'

As a whole class challenge we all took our shoes off and were able to measure them using a ruler and cubes. Here are some of the exciting things year 1 had to say about their learning this week.

Lena- My shoe was 19cm and Miss Ward's shoe was 25cm, hers is longer than mine.

Rokan- My shoe is 13 cubes and Anas' shoe is 16, mine is short

Miss Ward- My shoe is 25 cm long and Mrs Younas shoe is 23cm long. My shoe is 2cm longer!

Please take a look at our photo album to see the children measuring in action!
