Year 6 Yoga!
Today we experienced our very first taste of Yoga. Initially, some of us weren’t sure what to expect, however by the end of the session, we didn’t want to stop.
Today we experienced our very first taste of Yoga. Despite no one having tried yoga before, everyone had a positive attitude towards this new challenge.
What is Yoga?
Yoga is the practice of accessing and integrating all aspects of our true nature -- body, mind, and spirit.
- It Enhances Physical Flexibility
- It Refines Balance and Coordination
- It Develops Focus and Concentration
- It Boosts Self-Esteem and Confidence
- It Strengthens the Mind-Body Connection
In this first session we work on some of the more straightforward positions for beginners like us, including: downward dog, cat and waterfall. With each different position, we learnt about the muscles that we would be stretching. We then moved on to balance, a key element within yoga.
Mindfulness
To end the session we focused on our mindfulness. Mindfulness is a very simple form of meditation that consists of focusing your full attention on your breath as it flows in and out of your body. Focusing on each breath in this way allows you to observe your thoughts as they arise in your mind and, little by little, to let go of struggling with them. The theory behind this is that you will come to realise that thoughts come and go of their own accord; that you are not your thoughts. You can watch as they appear in your mind, seemingly from thin air, and watch again as they disappear, like a soap bubble bursting.
