Newspaper reports
This week Year 5 have been looking at newspapers and writing our own reports for the very first time.
This week we have begun our new Literacy focus- Newspaper reports.
Reading a newspaper is a good habit that can provide a great sense of educational value. It carries information about politics, economy, entertainment, sports, business, industry, trade and commerce. Newspapers provide information and general knowledge.
In this digital age and with so many other avenues of communication available to us, it seems that a newspaper is outdated and irrelevant, imparting news that has already been hashed to death over social media and texting.
Even in the days when such technology didn’t exist, newspapers were not the primary source of information for children. Reading newspapers provides wide ranging benefits for everyone in general, but especially for children, they remain the most invaluable source of news and information, despite the onslaught of the electronic media. Reading newspapers automatically improves children's language skills.
We located a range of newspapers, highlighted where we could locate key features and what could explain what we found that interested us. We ensured we were confident with all the key features- The headline, date of newspaper, byline, subheading, photo, caption, Lead, Body and conclusion.
Then we shared ideas for what would make a great newspaper headline and report. After that, we wrote our own newpapers. This is the first time we wrote our own newpaper reports independently. You can view our photo album to read some too. We are sure you will find some interesting stories!
