Measuring up
This week in maths we have been exploring measures.
First we used a ruler, tape measure, meter stick and a trundle wheel to measure the lengths of different objects around the room. Did you know that there are 100 cm in 1 metre?
Second day in and Miss Greaves set us a challenge. We had to investigate statements about the body. The first statement read “the size of your foot is the same length as your forearm” - lots of children didn’t believe it was true. We predicted that the foot would be much bigger. We were wrong.
We then moved on to exploring other facts about the body.

Nose length is equivalent to first two digits of index/pointer finger

Head is approximately four to five eyes wide

Length of face is equal to length of hand

Eyes are separated by one eye’s width

Bottom of nose to outside corner of eye is equal to length of ear
We learnt a lot about which measuring tools work best. You can’t measure the eye using a plastic ruler! We brought our maths learning to life and it was a great link to our theme for this half term ‘What happens inside us!’
