On Friday, 17 June, over 500 Year 5 and 6 pupils from 17 Academies sponsored by the Greenwood Academies Trust took part in a primary indoor athletics competition at Braunstone Leisure Centre.
Val Sabin, one of the leading Physical Education practitioners in the Country attended the event alongside Mike Westwell, a trainee teacher at the Nottingham Academy, who recently won gold and silver medals at the Invictus Games 2016.
Pupils took part in various traditional indoor athletics events including soft javelin, standing long jump speed bounce and vertical jump, alongside a plethora of sprint and obstacles races.
MASSIVE congratulations in particular to Tyran and Adrian (Y6) who won their race and to Maja (Y5) for a phenomenal effort in the girls 6 lap parluff event.
Jamie Kilner, Director of Sport at the GDFT, said: “The sport departments within our primary Academies have extensive expertise and enthusiasm for sport and this inter-academy competition demonstrates our commitment to providing competitive sporting experiences for pupils across the Trust. I am delighted that we are able to include pupils from our Danesholme Junior Academy and our Hazel Leys Academy which joined us this year.
“It is an honour to have Mike at this event and I am sure he will be an inspiration to our pupils. We are also privileged to have a trainer of the calibre of Val Sabin lending her support.”
As well as developing technical skills the competition supported the social, personal and cultural development of pupils. This competition is part of the extensive programme of events taking place this summer which showcases how the Greenwood Academies Trust is celebrating the Olympic and Paralympic values and exploring Brazilian culture.
