Circus Skills Day!
Roll-up! Roll-up! To kick-start our term, the whole school participated in a circus skills workshop in order to learn something new and have fun! The circus hasn’t been to BCA for a long time, so we used our sport premium funding to provide all children the opportunity to broaden their skill-sets.
Roll-up! Roll-up! To kick-start our term, the whole school participated in a circus skills workshop in order to learn something new and have fun! The circus hasn’t been to BCA for a long time, so we used our sport premium funding to provide all children the opportunity to broaden their skill-sets.
After watching Jemma perform all the super tricks in an assembly first thing, everyone was eager to try the activities out for themselves! Below are some of the super skills we tried out…
Scarf Juggling
Now this was harder than it looks! We used different colour scarves to practice and develop our juggling skills. The scarves are slow and floaty which allowed us to move and be creative. They also enabled us to focus on colours and use our coordination skills. Some of us found this really tricky, but we definitely all improved by the end of the session!
Feather Balancing
Feather balancing required attention, imagination and determination. To be able to juggle or perform any circus skill you have to focus your attention, so this was a great skill to practice. It involved balancing a huge, long peacock feather on our little finger, Jemma could balance the feather on her nose!
Plate Spinning
Plate spinning was a firm favourite of all classes. The key to success was gentle relaxed movement. We had to use serious focus and concentration for this one, first we had to balance the plate, then we needed to start spinning, which required just the right amount of effort to spin. If that wasn’t enough, we then had to keep it balanced and even try to move it to our finger!
Ribbons and Poi Spinning
The art of ribbon and poi spinning. This coordinate both sides of the body and brain. This helped us to practice skills like spatial awareness and choreographic skills. Everyone enjoyed making patterns from the ribbon and making the ribbons ‘dance’.
Diablo and Flower Stick
The Diablo was difficult! The required constant movement in order to keep it moving, we had to concentrate and keep a rhythm in order to be successful!
A brilliant day was had by all, what a fantastically fun way to start our new term. Some of the skills we practised today, determination, concentration, focus and persistence, will be incredibly useful to take back and use within our classrooms!
